The Best Time of Year to Visit the Galápagos
The Galápagos is a year-round destination — wildlife is always there, and the itineraries on ships like the Celebrity Flora run all twelve months. But the experience changes meaningfully depending on when you go. Here is what I tell clients when they ask, "when should we book?"
The two seasons
The Galápagos has two seasons, both nothing like the four you may be used to:
- Warm / wet season — roughly December through May. Air temperatures in the mid-80s°F, water in the high 70s°F, calm seas, brief afternoon showers, and lush green islands. This is the warmest and most comfortable season for snorkeling.
- Cool / dry season — roughly June through November. Air in the mid 70s°F, water in the 65–72°F range (a wetsuit is your friend), more wind, and the arid landscapes you remember from documentaries. Excellent visibility and the most active marine life thanks to the cool, nutrient-rich Humboldt Current.
Water temperature matters more than air temperature
You will spend a lot of time in the water. The Flora and most ships include shorty wetsuits, which is plenty for December–May. From June through November the water is genuinely cool and a 3mm full wetsuit makes a real difference. If you run cold, lean toward the warm season.
Wildlife breeding cycles
The animals do not migrate — but their behavior is highly seasonal. A few highlights:
- Giant tortoises — nesting in the highlands roughly June through December.
- Blue-footed boobies — courtship dances most active May through July.
- Waved albatross — present on Española April through December; gone the rest of the year.
- Sea lion pups — born August through November; expect a lot of beach noise.
- Marine iguanas — most colorful (bright red and green) during breeding season, December through March.
- Penguins and marine life — most active in the cool season when the Humboldt Current is strongest.
My honest recommendation
If this is your first trip and you want the easiest weather, calm seas, and warm snorkeling, target March through May. If you are a serious snorkeler or diver and want the most marine action — penguins, dolphins, big schools of fish — target July through October and bring a real wetsuit. Either way, book early. The good ships sell out twelve to eighteen months in advance.
