Explora Journeys for Families
The Nautilus Club, interconnecting suites, and what a family-owned luxury line does differently with children aboard.

Luxury cruising and children are not always an obvious pairing. Many high-end lines quietly discourage young families, and the ones that welcome them often hand kids a room with a video screen and little else. Explora Journeys takes a different approach, and it starts with who owns the company.
Explora Journeys is a family-owned company and welcomes families onboard.
The Nautilus Club: a dedicated space with trained hosts
The Nautilus Club is a dedicated space for younger guests aged 6 to 17. Children aged 3 to 5 are welcome at specific intervals for age-appropriate activities, when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Open every day from 9:00 to midnight.
Nautilus Club hosts are certified according to CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) policies and standards on youth activities. That certification matters: your children are with staff trained to recognized youth-activity standards, not whoever happened to be free.
Inside, the game room is genuinely well stocked:
- Video games and VR consoles including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2, Xbox, iPads and Oculus Pro
- A pool table designed and crafted in Italy by MBM Biliardi
- Foosball and a multi-game table
- A jukebox tablet connected to streaming music platforms
- Board games and a digital library across multiple languages
- Sports sessions, technology tournaments, painting, and arts and crafts
Younger guests also get reserved periods at the Sports Court, one of the heated pools, and other locations around the ship.
Suites that work for a family
Explora welcomes multigenerational families with 82 interconnecting suites across Ocean Suite, Ocean Penthouse, and Ocean Residence categories, the Nautilus Club for guests aged 6 to 17, and destination experiences curated for families. Children aged 2 to 17 benefit from savings of up to 50%, infants aged 6 to 23 months sail free and adults traveling as third or fourth guests in the same suite save up to 25%. Promotions vary by departure; confirm before booking.
Interconnecting suites give parents their own space while keeping children close, and the larger categories can serve as a gathering point for a bigger group. We confirm the exact configuration, occupancy limits, and bedding on your chosen ship before recommending a layout.
What the fare covers with a family
The onboard fare covers most dining, a broad selection of drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, thermal-area access, and fitness and wellbeing programs. A welcome bottle of champagne and an in-suite spirit of your choice are also included. Port-to-city shuttle services are available where offered.
Anthology dining, destination experiences (shore excursions), airfare, and spa treatments are additional costs. Confirm any other premium selections or optional services before booking, and check shuttle availability at each port. For a family, the practical question is what the children will actually use: the pools, the club, the casual dining, and the destinations. We price the whole trip, including flights and the experiences you want ashore, rather than comparing fares alone.
Who this suits, and who it does not
Explora works well for families who want a contemporary, hotel-style ship, flexible dining with no fixed times, and a kids program that feels considered rather than bolted on. The atmosphere stays adult-oriented, so it suits families whose children are comfortable in that setting.
If your children want water slides, a giant arcade, and hundreds of other kids aboard, a larger family-focused ship will serve them better. And if you want included shore excursions for the whole family, note that Explora prices destination experiences separately; our Explora vs Regent comparison covers the differences.
What to share before we choose a sailing
- Everyone's ages at sailing, especially the children, and any dietary or mobility needs.
- Your school-holiday dates and preferred region, Mediterranean, Northern Europe, or the Caribbean.
- Whether interconnecting suites matter, and the total trip budget including flights.
- How much structured activity your children want versus pool and family time.
With those details we can compare departures, confirm current child savings, and arrange suites, dining, and the travel around the cruise. Read our Explora Journeys guide for more on the ships, dining, and included value.
Explora publishes ages, hours, and host certification on its Nautilus Club page. Confirm specifics for your departure before booking; program details and promotions can change.
