Why Transfer Your Cruise Booking to a Travel Advisor

A surprising number of travelers book their cruise directly on the line's website, then spend the next year handling every question, change, and payment deadline themselves. What most don't realize: that reservation can usually be transferred to a travel advisor after the fact, at no cost, with nothing about the trip changing.

What stays exactly the same

  • Your ship, sailing date, suite, and itinerary.
  • Your fare and any promotion you booked under.
  • Your deposit and payment schedule.
  • Your loyalty number and status with the line.

A transfer is an administrative change, not a rebooking. The reservation number stays the same because it is the same reservation.

What gets better

Someone watches your fare. Prices move between booking and final payment. When a fare drops or a stronger promotion appears, I catch it and get it applied. Booked direct, that monitoring is your job, and the line is not going to call you about a lower price.

Amenities where they're available. On many sailings I can add shipboard credit or other extras that aren't offered on the line's own website, at the same fare you're already paying.

One person who knows your trip. Specialty dining reservations, shore excursion strategy, celebration requests, pre-cruise hotels, flight schedule questions. Instead of a call center queue, you email or call me directly.

Nobody drops the follow-up. Call center staff take the booking and end the call. No one reminds you when specialty dining reservations open or when a shore excursion you wanted sells out, and the hotels and flights around the sailing stay your problem to arrange. I track those dates and handle the pieces on either side of the ship.

Insurance you can actually choose. A cruise line can only sell you its own policy, and those plans usually mean narrower coverage at a higher price. An advisor can compare plans from many reputable third-party insurers and match one to the trip you have booked.

Why it costs nothing

Cruise lines build an advisor commission into every fare. When you book direct, the line simply keeps it. The price is the same either way, so the only real question is whether you want the support that fare already pays for.

The timing matters

Most lines allow a transfer within a set window after the booking is made. Regent and Oceania bookings must be moved within 30 days of the booking itself, and Viking allows 60 days. Tauck works differently: you can transfer right up until final payment is made, but the request goes to Tauck directly, by phone, so they can confirm the change with you themselves. Silversea and Explora participate as well, each with their own rules.

If you booked onboard during a sailing, Regent gives you 30 days after you return home to move the reservation, and you keep every onboard booking perk.

If your booking is recent, the transfer process takes one short form, and I handle it directly with the line.

Transfer windows and policies vary by cruise line and are subject to change. Information is accurate as of October 2026.
