Choose on atmosphere before price
Think classic ocean liner versus floating modern hotel. Oceania and Explora offer distinctly different vibes at surprisingly similar price points, making the choice entirely down to personal style rather than budget. A note on price: Explora relies heavily on dynamic pricing. Some Explora sailings are very competitive price wise with Oceania and others price very high, if the cruise is selling well.
Dining
Oceania emphasizes culinary consistency and included specialty dining. Explora puts varied restaurant settings at the center of its hotel-at-sea approach, alongside included wines and spirits. Both deserve consideration from food-focused travelers. On Explora, Anthology costs extra and restaurant reservations and opening hours still apply.
EXPLORA I and EXPLORA II each have six restaurants and 12 bars and lounges. In-suite dining is also available. Most dining is included; Anthology is available for an added charge.
The onboard fare covers most dining, a broad selection of drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, thermal-area access, and fitness and wellbeing programs. A welcome bottle of champagne and an in-suite spirit of your choice are also included. Port-to-city shuttle services are available where offered.
My recommendations
If you drink, I recommend the beverage option. It covers wine and beer by the glass during lunch and dinner restaurant hours, not cocktails or all-day drinks. We can compare an upgrade with what you expect to order.
Look at total time in port across the whole cruise, not just the number of stops. Compare arrival and departure hours, overnight stays, sea days, and travel time from the berth to the places you want to visit. A longer port list does not always give you more time ashore.

- Which line is more formal?
- Oceania is the more traditional of the two. Explora keeps a relaxed contemporary dress code with no formal evenings.
- Are all Explora accommodations suites?
- Yes. Every Explora Journeys accommodation is a suite with an ocean-facing terrace.
