Silversea vs Seabourn: Two Ultra-Luxury Small Ships

Both offer ultra-luxury ocean and expedition travel. Silversea leads with butler service in every suite; Seabourn leads with personal crew relationships and a relaxed club-at-sea atmosphere. Ben's Luxury Journeys is a Seabourn Elite Agency.

The short answer

Choose Silversea for butler service in every suite and its Galapagos program. Choose Seabourn Ocean for relaxed, yacht-like luxury where personal recognition matters, or Seabourn Expedition for Antarctica, the Arctic, and the Kimberley with expert-led Zodiac exploration. Standard ocean shore excursions cost extra on both lines.

The crew makes the difference

Seabourn's appeal is feeling recognized and acknowledged rather than like a reservation number. Its ocean ships carry roughly 458 to 600 guests, with a relaxed, social atmosphere that suits travelers who value familiar service and a consistent product.

The choice is not simply which ship is smallest. Guest counts overlap between the brands. Choose around the service style you enjoy: a sociable club-at-sea setting on Seabourn, or Silversea's quieter atmosphere and dedicated butler service.

Service in the suite

Silversea includes dedicated butler service in every suite category. Seabourn emphasizes personal suite service and crew attention rather than the same fleetwide butler model. Silversea now groups its suites into Oceanview, Veranda, Residence, and Villa categories. Oceanview suites have picture windows, while the Veranda category is the recommended starting point when private outdoor space matters.

For sailings from January 1, 2027, Silversea's Residence and Villa categories add benefits beyond the standard suite inclusions. Villa guests on expedition voyages also receive more choice around Zodiac and kayaking departures, plus access to expedition operations behind the scenes.

Dining

Seabourn includes dining and fine wines and spirits, making it a strong fit for guests who enjoy long dinners and wine without repeated onboard spending decisions. Solis, on select ocean ships, serves Mediterranean cuisine alongside venues such as The Restaurant and The Colonnade. Silversea offers several dining styles, with cover charges at La Dame and Kaiseki and complimentary caviar around the clock. On port days, Silversea's lunch choices include La Terrazza and The Grill.

Expeditions change the comparison

Seabourn Ocean and Seabourn Expedition together reach all seven continents. Venture and Pursuit are purpose-built expedition ships for destinations including Antarctica, the Arctic, and the Kimberley. Naturalists, scientists, and historians lead the program, with included Zodiac exploration and landings when conditions permit. Optional kayaking and submarine outings need a separate availability and price check. In Alaska, Ventures by Seabourn is an optional program, not an automatic ocean-fare inclusion. Silversea remains a choice for these remote regions and for the Galapagos, where Seabourn does not operate a comparable program.

How I would decide

  • Butler service in every suite and the widest choice of restaurants: Silversea
  • Personal recognition, relaxed ocean luxury, and sociable evenings: Seabourn Ocean
  • Antarctica, the Arctic, or the Kimberley: consider both expedition programs
  • Galapagos with butler service: Silversea
